Great Debate & Dr Appt Update

Boy or Girl?
The debate is on: To find out or not to find out the gender of our Dragon!  To set the record straight,  I'm opposed to finding out and Ryan is for it.  Our ultrasound is scheduled for August 23rd so in approximately one month we will need to come to some kind of compromise.  Maybe I'll cave?  I guess time will tell!

16 Week Dr. Appoint Update
The appointment was with our nurse practitioner and was actually at 15 weeks 5 days, not quite 16.  The appointment itself lasted about 10 minutes.  She asked a bunch of questions about the symptoms she thought I might have, all of which I responded with a, "No, not a problem for me."  I'm tracking a bit behind in weight gain but nothing of concern quite yet.  I have MAYBE gained 2 pounds at best but am adding girth, as my mother likes to say.

Baby Nordy was once again ready to show off his or her heart beat.  The doppler to check for the heart beat barely touched my skin and we immediately heard the heart beating!  It's pretty amazing to hear.  This month is was just above 140 beats per min.  Last month it was just above 160.  Changes in the heart rate throughout pregnancy are expected and normal.

While listening for the heart beat the baby was moving so the nurse practitioner had to continue to move the doppler to keep listening.  Again, it's pretty awesome!  While I can't feel (or don't know if I do feel) anything yet, it's fantastic to know that Baby Nordy is already following Ryan's & my love of staying active :)  I'm sure I'll regret saying that in a few weeks or months when he or she is kicking me awake every hour during the night.

When I hit 16 weeks, I'll post a picture of my growing girth :)

We're Expecting: 01.12.13

The whole pregnancy thing seems a bit surreal to both Ryan and I.  I think every emotion from nervousness to excitement and elation has been felt at some point in the past few weeks.  We looking forward to each Dr. appointment, pregnancy milestone and getting to meet our little baby on January 12th, 2013.

Quite fittingly, Ryan and I found out we were pregnant on Mother's Day.  Given that we were to go on a Mexican vacation only 6 days later we opted not to tell our families until we returned (mothers worry - A LOT).  Since our first Dr. appointment was only a few days after our return we waited to hear the heartbeat and see our growing embryo before we shared the news at 8 weeks.  Our families were beyond excited and there were even a few tears of joy!  The hardest part for our families was keeping it a secret as we had asked them not to tell anyone until we reached the second trimester, where the risk of miscarriage drops significantly.

I'm currently at 15 weeks, feeling good and enjoying watching this baby slowly expand my tummy.  I've been lucky to have no morning sickness or nausea.  Tired and thirsty, as well as very crabby & nauseated when hungry have been the extent of my symptoms.  Most symptoms have subsided a bit, now that I am in the second trimester.  I have been able to continue my running, with reduced miles and frequent breaks to keep my body cool enough for Baby Nordy to receive enough blood flow.  After observing friends with morning sickness and other pregnancy-related discomforts, I sure am glad that I have been ok so far!

We've taken to calling this baby either Baby Nordy or Dragon Baby.  It's pretty obvious why we call it Baby Nordy.  Dragon Baby takes a bit of explanation.  When in China earlier this year, the whole country was preparing for the Chinese New Year and a big year it is:  the Year of the Dragon!  The Year of the Dragon began on January 23rd and will end on February 9th, 2013  (I better have this baby by then!!).  Dragon is a highly regarded animal of the Chinese Zodiac.  Also, during our first ultrasound, Dragon Baby did look a bit like a dragon as it had yet to grow into it's tail! :)

Overall, it is an exciting time in our lives.  Our 3rd year of marriage certainly will bring many life changes: ones that have been envisioned for quite some time!  Can't wait to meet our little person!

I will try to post fairly regularly to provide more news as Baby Nordy grows and develops.  Up next:  the debate on names, gender and where the heck we're going to live.

"The dragon enjoys a very high reputation in Chinese culture. It is the token of authority, dignity, honor, success, luck, and capacity. In ancient China, a dragon was thought to speed across the sky with divine power. "
